OPPORTUNITIES.

FOR WOMEN DOCTORS. There are great opportunities for women doctors in New Zealand, said Dr Muriel Rippin, who returned by the Monowai after a holiday tour of that country yesterday (says the Sydney Morning Herald of January 14). Dr Rippin, who is a graduate of London University, and whose practice now is at Bungendong, Canberra, saw Dr Elaine Gurr in Auckland, and in Wellington the city’s three women doctors, Dr Agnes Bennett, Dr AcTa Paterson, and Dr Elizabeth Bryson. Dr Bennett had retired. Dr Paterson was in the schools’ medical service, which Icit Dr Bryson with the monopoly of work among those who preferred to consult a woman doctor, Dr Rippin said. She had such an extensive practice that she turned many cases away, and could see people only by appointment. Dr Bryson herself said that any woman doctor, particularly one who had specialised in obstetrics, would find amnle support in Wellington. Though she is a general practitioner, Dr Rippin is particularly interested in ante and post natal work, and while she was in New Zealand she took every opportunity of visiting the Truby King homes. She herself has always used Sir Truby King methods in her treatment of mothers and babies, and she said she had had admirable results. What impressed her particularly was the fact that the homes, being supported by the Government, were able to give away literature on mothercraft free of charge. Apart from the professional interest in her visit, Dr Rippin was most impressed by the management of the tourist traffic in New Zealand, and the service it offered. FLAVOURING. An unusual flavouring which gives a new interest to both cakes and sweets is a grapefruit flavouring, states an exchange- It can be made simply from grapefruit rinds. Save a quantity of rinds and leave them in the oven to dry. Then grate and bottle- them. The bottles should he perfectly airtight. A flavouring of this kind would be found most useful for innumerable purposes, and is well worth the little preparation involved. It is particularly good for milk puddings.
