A HIGHER STANDARD. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, Jan. 20. The University Senate to-day approved the Tecommendaution of the Academic Hoard, and a motion by the vice-chancellor (Professor 1. A. Hunter) that the standard of entrance to the University be raised. It also adopted a resolution moved by Mr L. J. Wild that the executive committee appoint a qualified person to report on tile whole question of the entrance examination. Professor Hunter’s motion reads:- — ‘‘That the executive committee be directed to adopt the policy of raising gradually the pass standard 10 the entrance examination.” The motion by Mr Wild was: “That the executive committee be instructed to appoint at a suitable remuneration a qualified person to report on the whole question of the entrance examination, and in particular on the following points: (1) The standard of the examination in relation to similar examinations in other universities and to the requirement* of New Zealand; (2) the standard in relation to the aims and methods ot the teaching of the various subjects in post-primaiy schools; (3) the standard in relation to’ that of the school certificate examination; (4) the method and the effects of the scaling ot marks; (o) the general procedure of the results committee; (6) the utilising ot the estimates of the schools in dctei mining pass or fail in borderline cases, the general question of accrediting.
