ANNIVERSARY DAY.

HOLIDAY FIXTURES TOMORROAV. On January 22, 1840. the Aurora, the first oh the small pioneer fleet which had left England in 1839, sailed into Port Nicholson carrying the initial band oi the 1500 immigrants who founded the AA’ellington province, .v mety-six years will have elapsed tomorrow since the opening of that chapter in the history of New Zealand colonisation, and it will he celebrated with a holiday as Anniversary Day. Numerous sports fixtures have been arranged, principal among these being tho Ashhurst races and the first day’s play in the cricket match, M.C.C. v. Manawatu, this fixture being set down for the Sportsground. The New Zealand croquet championships will open at this centre, and five progressive pairs bowling tournaments will be held on the local clubs’ greens, every one of which will be in session. The Manawatu Lawn Tennis Association’s district tournament will commence on the Linton Street courts, the Scottish Society-’s annual picnicwill be in progress at Awaptuii and motor-cycle races will be held at the Park Road ground. Chess players will be able to attend exhibitions by Mr C. J. S. Purdy, the Australian champion, who will be in Palmerston North. Provided the weather is fine, tomorrow should be a great day for outdoor attractions in the Manawatu which, besides its organised sports fixtures, offers splendid beaches and delightful picnic retreats.
