FOXTON.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) FOXTON, Jan. 18. Torrential rain fell overnight, the gauge at the Post Office registering 118 points. This is the heaviest downpour experienced in Foxton and district for some time. It is many years since Foxton has presented such a green appearance at this time ot the year. Generally the ground is dry and parched and pastures ravaged by grass fires. As a result of the considerable amount of rain exporcncod throughout the summer this year the old river bed at the Beach has remained wet and the track across it to the ocean beach lias consequently not been of the best.. Frequently cars have found water well up to the hub caps and many. motorists have preferred to remain on the river foreshore. What is required is some attention to the drainage of this scakage water to give a hard and permanent surface across the flat. There was a large gathering of members and friends at the Salvation Army Hall on Thursday evening on the occasion of the welcome to the new officers. Adjutant and Mrs Barnes, formerly of Taihapc, who are the successors to Captain and Mrs Read who have been transferred to . New Brighton. Cliriotchureh. A welcome was also extended to Mr F. Oakley, from Lyttelton, who will be making an indefinite stay in Foxton. The arrangements were in the hands of C.S.M. Wishnowsky. Speakers during the evening were Treasurer J Burns, Rev. C. W. Brown, Mrs J. Burns and C.S.M. Wishnowsky. In spite of continued adverse weather conditions the spirits' of the boys in the scout camp at Ohau Valley remain at a high level and full advantage has been taken of any fine weather offering. Visitors’ day proved to be fine and quite a number of visitors joined the boys in their al fresco meals, and some also in swimming in the splendid pool only a few yards from the camp.
