MAGISTRATE’S COURT.

A sitting of the Magistrate’s Court was held yesterday, when, in the absence of the Stipendiary Magistrate (Mr J. L. Stout), Messrs W. U. Ashworth and W. Lowe Black. J.P.’s., presided. A young man, George Bryce Boyd, was charged that he had been deemed to be an idle and disorderly person in that he had insufficient visible means of support. He pleaded guilty. Detective Barling stated that accused was a single man, aged 27 years. He had come to New Zealand from Scotland in 1912, but had spent two years in Samoa, returning to the Dominion in September last. He had had a fair sum of money as superannuation, but it had gradually dwindled and for the past 10 days he had been sleeping in railway stations at Awapuni and Terrace End and in haystacks. Nothing was known against him. Asked if he had anything to say, accused stated that he had good prospects of securing a job at Te Arolia. Failing it being forthcoming he would get in touch with his brother at New Plymouth. Accused was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence, if called upon, at any time within the next six months. Three cyclists were fined 10s . and costs for riding bicycles at night without having a light affixed thereto. In imposing the fines, the Bench pointed out that by using the road at night without lights the cyclists we-e not only a danger to themselves, but to other users of the road. t
