WINTER BLIZZARD
EASTERN U.S. SWEPT. (United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) NEW YORK, Jail. 19. Tornadoes in several southern States and a blizzard which swept up the North Atlantic coast-line took a heavy death toll during the past 24 hours. At least 17 were killed and several scores injured. • Terrific winds demolished rural homes in sections of Florida, Alabama and Georgia. At New York, which is covered with eight inches of snow jnd sleet, eight have died of exposure or heart attacks attributable to overexertion in walking through the high drifts. SNOW IN BRITAIN. ROADS ICE-BOUND. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, Jan. 18. Roads all over Britain were icebound earlv this morning as the result of a sharp frost following yesterday’s snow. In many parts of Southern England a thaw set in later in the day, but elsewhere there were further heavy falls of snow. Skating is in lull swing in Lincolnshire. Snow and frost have interfered seriously with the week-end sporting programme.
