The jockey, Winder, was severely cautioned and instructed to infuse more vigour into his riding in future., The totalisatur handled £11,794, as compared with £9295 10s on the second clay last year. Ho will be ridden by R. W. Savage in the Wellington Cup. DEATH OF TRAINER. AIR W. DAVIES. The death occurred at Wellington on Saturday, in his 82nd year, of Air William Davies, who trained Rapa, the winner of the first Wellington Cup to be contested on the Trentham course. Ho gained hio first success in the Geraldine Cup when Mignonette won in 1875, while--the last horse ho trained was Sonite, whom he raced afterwards in Australia. George Price,_ now one of Randwiek’s most successful trainers, was first horseman for the stable at one period, while T. R. At a country race meeting at Kempsey the horse Aniamillah, the owner, Airs R. Denham, the trainer, R. Denham, the jockey, A-. Wahnslev, and a youth, B. Davis, were disqualified for life following the alleged discovery cf a battery. There were only four starters in the Stott .Cup and in view of hundreds of spectators Walmsley, rider of Amanullah, was ordered to dismount by a policeman while on his way to the barrier. The jockey was searched and later at the inquiry it was alleged that a battery had been handed Walmsley by Davis under instructions from Mrs Denham. It was also stated that a battery hud been found on the jockey.
