Mr M. J. Savage, the, Prime Minister, may l>o a visitor to Palmerston North on Wednesday next to open the garden party to be conducted by the Sisters of Mercy.
At the meeting of the Citizens’ Lunch Club yesterday, members congratulated Mr J. H. Stevens m that the occasion was the 54th anniversary of liis wedding day. Mr Alan Cohen, of London, son of the late Mr and .Mrs Maurice Cohen, is at present visiting Palmerston North and is the guest of Mr and Mrs R. Davis, Queen Street. The many friends in Palmerston North of Rev. J. C. Abbott, vicar of Taihape, will be pleased to hear that, according to information received here, lie is making steady progress towards recovery after liis severe illness. Mr W. S. Wauchop, M.A., actingchief Parliamentary librarian, who is well-known in art and dramatic circles throughout the Dominion, will be the speaker at the annual breaking-up function in connection with the Palmerston North Technical School, to be held at the Opera House on Wednesday evening next. The death occurred at Dunedin on November 27 of Mr S. F. Wliitcombe, a former South Island superintendent of railways. He was born in June, 1859 at St. Brieuc, Brittany, where his father, the late Captain T. Douglas Wliitcombe, K.G.G., of the Royal Madras Artillery, had settled after leaving the army. After some years at a public school in the south of Lngland, Mr Wbitcombe completed his education at the Imperial Lycee at St. Brieuc, and joined the Midland Railway Company. In 1875 he came to New Zealand and entered the railway service in February, 1876. He held the position of traffic manager in several districts before rising to the position of South Island superintendent.
