THE WOODVILLE FIXTURE.

HANDICAP TO WEROHIA. HERITAGE WINS THE SPRINT. Glorious weather and a perfect track were offering for the opening day of the Woodville Jockey Club’s summer meeting yesterday, but the attendance of patrons was not as good as expected. As a result the totalisator returns decreased, the sum of £3910 10s being handled as compared witli £5470 10s on the off-day (Monday) last year. The principal honours went to Wcrohia, who registered an attractive performance by acting as the _ pacemaker and then having sufficient in reserve to hold on in the straight, although Entail registered an excellent effort by coming from the back with a sustained run to fill second _ place. In winning the Oete Handicap in the fast time of 1.12 1-5, the Posterity colt Heritage produced a phenomenal turn of speed to accord a sprinter of the ability of Royal Routine a start of several lengths ,on the turn and then beat him.

A SPEEDY FAMILY.

JOURNET’S PLEASING EFFORT.

In his younger days Journet proved to be a difficult horse to handle, but the elder brother to Golden Chant and Bazaine has settled down since being put to. the jumping branch, and he won the Manga-atua Hurdles in good style from the favourite, Gold Cure. Midacre and Tambo were the early leaders, Gold Cure being in the rear. Turning into the back Jazz King momentarily took charge from Journet, but almost immediately Gold Cure ran past to lead crossing the top from Midacre and Jazz King, Journet having dropped back. The last named made a fast run to the final fence and, securing a clear passage on the rail, outpaced Gold Cure to win by a length and a half with Jazz King six lengths back.

BOOMERANG SCORES,

WINNING ACCOUNT OPENED,

Boomerang, who was a firm favurite for the Maiden Stakes, was in the ruck in the early stages, but he finished strongly to beat the well-bred Martial Lady by a neck. It was a surprising performance on the part of the latter, who was having her first outing for the season. Golden Time displayed the family speed by dashing to the front from Martial Lady, Conversion, and Drumpeel and they raced in that order across the top, Sir Ronald, who had drawn the inside position at the barrier, having been slow to move. A great race to the post ensued, Martial Lady wresting the lead only to be beaten in the last few strides by Boomerang, who finished strongly to score by a head with Conversion half a neck back.

FAST RUN RACE.

IN THE YAN THROUGHOUT. All 10 acceptors went to the post in the Bolton Handicap for which Entail was a firm favourite from Werohia. The pair returned the dividends, but in reversed order, Entail coming too late to overtake Wcrohia, who had been in the van throughout. The field got away in good line, 'Wcrohia going to the front to pilot Vanestep, Passion Fruit, and Speed as they turned away from home. Going along the back Slippery ran up to attend the pacemaker as they passed the half mile post, Passion Fruit and Slippery with Vanestep, who had been pinched back, being next in the running. They came into the straight in that order and the leader held off the challenges to win by a length and a half from Entail, who came from well back to beat Vanestep for second money by a head. Passion Fruit, Speed, and Senior were in line with Walton Park in behind them.

A COMFORTABLE WIN

SUCCESS TO DAWNING LIGHT,

Although badly drawn at the barrier, the public did not hesitate to. instal Dawning Light favourite for the Nursery Handicap, and the filly won without being unduly pressed. Royal Minstrel was the smartest to begin, but he was quickly joined by Dawning Light with Star Beam ahead of Birthday Party. The last-named ran past in company with Dawning Light, and they led Royal Minstrel and Chat into the straight, the field being strung out. At the distance Dawning Light ran to the front and, although she was kept up to her work over the last half furlong, she won nicely by a length from Royal Minstrel, who finished on to beat Chat by a head. There was a similar interval to Birthday Party, who was followed by The Tramp.

VISITOR FROM BLENHEIM

JEWISH LAD .SCORES

Tidal Song was made favourite from Jewish Lad for the Trial Plate, but he could only finish sixth. Jewish Lad, however, won from start to finish to give 11. J. Mackie his first winning ride since liis return to the saddle. Contract declined to go into line and he was badly left. Jewish Lad and Mowgli ran to the front from Sunder, Bumble, and Ruenzori, but the last named was checked twice in the first two furlongs. Helen Ford moved up into fourth place behind Jewish Lad, Mowgli, and Sunder as they approached the straight'' entrance. In the run home Jewish Lad finished full of running to score by two lengths from Helen Ford, who beat Bumble by a head.

FINISHING ON

HERITAGE’S GREAT RUN

Heritage, a firm ,favourite for the Oete Handicap, was required to produce a great finishing run to win from Royal Routine, who showed a

return to his old brilliance. The time of the race must rank as one of the fastest recorded for some years. Royal Routine dashed to the front to lead from Cullus, Sunny Maid, Big Dook and Heritage. Crossing the top Cullus retired, his saddle having slipped, and Royal Routine was clear as they straightened out. The pacemaker was going strongly at the distance, but oyer the final pinch Heritage, who had moved up at the entrance, produced a great finishing run to win going away by a length and a half.

A GOOD DIVIDEND,

MESURINA PREVAILS.

There was good support for several of the runners in the Mangarawa Hack Handicap, Etliiop being a £5 better favourite than Lavina. However, a surprise was in store when Mesurina won.

Quake and Happy Hunting raced into the lead, only to bo joined by Blygain as they came across the top, while a furlong later Larina ran up. Happy Hunting gave way approaching the entrance, allowing the trio to lead into the straight where Etliiop and Hest came round. The leading division swung a shade wide and a bunch of horses joined issue in the centre, Mesurina wearing Lavina down inside the distance, while a quartette swooped down on the outside, Blue Tiger getting up to take second place a length and a half back and a neck in advance of Hest.

SHU WINS AGAIN. CORROBOREE WEAKENS. In the race for positions as they passed through the straight in the Wliariti Handicap, Corroboree and Shu were able to take charge and they remained there till the straight was reached, when Shu went on to win from the Hastings representative Granvale, with Corroboree third. It was Shu’s third successive win. There was some crowding on the turn as the field went away from home, Corroboree and Shu taking charge from Granvale and King’s Lancer with Darccourt, Cheerful Day, Chaste, amj Roinpalong next. Granvale, Chaste, and Dareeourt closed on the leaders approaching the entrance and, with heads straightened out for home ; Shu ran to the front with Granvale in pursuit. The topweight held on to win by half a length with Corroboree finishing on again, half a neck back and a head in advance of Chaste. THE DETAILED RUNNERS.
