LONGBURN.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) LONGBURN, Nov. 28.
A flag five hundred tournament was hold at the residence of Mr and Mrs Mabcy on Monday evening. There was a fair attendance, the proceeds being for the Christmas party which will be conducted by the Women’s Institute next rnontln The prizewinners were: —Messrs W. Franciß, B. Pratt, Walter Francis, and D. Rowland. A competition was won by Mrs W. Hill. An enjoyable surprise party was held at the residence of Mr and Mrs F. S. Birch on Tuesday evening. The paity took the form of a. handkerchief evening in honour of Miss Rita Birch, whose marriage takes place shortly. Competitions were won by Miss Joan Campbell, Mr E. Jewell, and Miss Birch who also rendered two enjoyable vocal numbers. At the conclusion Mr D. Rowland, on behalf of those present, wished Miss Birch every happiness and said that she would bo keenly missed by the Tennis Club of which she was a very enthusiastic member. Musical honours were then called for the guest cf honour, who suitably replied, saying that she would leave Longburn with many happy memories. Among those present were:—Mr and Mrs Birch, Mrs Godfrey, Misses R. Birch, J. Campbell, H. Rowland, M. Gleeson, L. Campbell, Messrs R. Rowland, H. Mabcy, E. Jewell. J. Aldcrsley, and D. Rowland. The proficiency examination was held in the Longburn School on Thursday when there were 23 sixth standard pupils present. Besides the twelve local pupils there wore ethers from Tiakitahuna (1), Rangiotu (6), and Bainesse (4). Of the twelve local pupils, seven gained their proficiency and the remainder secured their competency. Those conducting the examination were Miss Thompson (Rangiotu), Messrs Searle (Longburn), Robinson (Tiakitahuna), Kelly (Bainesse), and Crosby (inspector) .
