OLD MAORI OVEN.

DISCOVERY AT RONCOTEA. (From Our Own Correspondent.) RONGOTEA, Sept. 30. There is no tradition of Maori occupation of the area on which Rongotca is situated, it having been very heavily timbered and of a swampy nature; therefore the discovery by Mr E. 11. Gust, while ploughing on his property a few days ago of a Maori oven is of some interest. It consisted of a considerable number of large flat stones, which showed evidence of having been heated, and much of the ground surrounding the stones, and to some depth, had been burned; so it would appear that tho oven had been used several times, perhaps by a party of travelling Maoris camping on the spot many years ago. The oven was situated between two huge rata stumps, which, when growing trees, may have provided shelter. Some years ago a greenstone axe was found on this property by Mr Gust’s brother.
