ROOF LIFTED
WHIRLWIND DAMAGE. TE AH OH A, Sept. 26. Considerable damage was done to a timber mill by a sensational whirlwind which was seen b}' many residents of Te Aroha at 9.50 this morning. Starting in the vicinity of the dairy company’s < factory, the whirlwind swirled into' the large wood and iron premises of J. N. Wood and Son, timber merchants, in Honi Street, and quickly lifted off about thirty sheets of
9ft galvanised roofing iron, together with boards and scantlings, about onefifth of the roof being torn off. The wood and iron was carried at a height of 400 ft to 600 ft to Rewi Street and several hundred yards to the east. For at least three minutes the wreckage hovered high in the air over the vicinity of the police station and Courthouse, eventually falling in Kenrick Street near the damaged pemises. The whirlwind entered the front door, and, having no outlet at the back, wrenched the iron and timber off the roof. Workmen at once set to work to repair the damage. Nobody was injured.
