The annual Bulb Show organised by the local branch of tho Women’s Institute was held in the Anglican schoolroom yesterday afternoon. Ideal weather conditions prevailed, and tho attendance during the .afternoon was very satisfactory. Tho initial show was held seven years ago and with the yearly increasing popularity of this spring exhibition, accommodation on tins occasion was taxed to its utmost. Considering the inclement wea.thcr experienced lately, the record number of 417 entries eclipsed expectation and included some excellent specimens in the narcissi and cut flowers sections. Mr Hamilton,, in his remarks, said he was pleasantly surprised at the record number of entries., and the officials had every reason to be justly proud of the show and tho specimens of blooms produced. The strong entries in narcissi were exceptionally good and would, do justice to a much larger district, and an some instances he found it difficult to place the winners. He commented particularly and favourably upon tho highly creditable display of cut flowers, special mention being made of the violets, hyacinths and Iceland poppies. The trophy for the champion bloom was awarded Mrs G. T. Allen with a fine specimen of “King Alfred.” The points prize in the narcissi section was won by Mrs Albretchscn (25 points), while in the. cut flowers and decorative section the winner was Mrs Wicks with 20 points. The tea-rooms were well patronised during the afternoon. During an interval, Mrs F. Hooper (president of the institute) commented upon the succeSs of the show and congratulated the exhibitors on the fine quality of the blooms and the work displayed in the decorative classes. She briefly referred to the steady progress maintained each year, with every hope for a continuation of the same in the future. She thanked tho judges for officiating and the public for their patronage. In all 32 trophies had been generously given, and she particularly thanked the donors.. Much help had been graciously forthcoming in preparing the hail and in various other ways, and in conclusion she conveyed the thanks of tho institute to all who had in the slightest manner assisted in making the show so pronounced a success; on her own behalf thanked those members of the committee, and also the other members of the institute who had been her loyal workers and supporters. Mr Ball, of Masterton, judged tho bulbs, cut flowers and vegetables, and Mrs Scharmvebcr, also of Masterton, judged the decorative work. In contenting upon the show, Mr Ball said the strong entries in all sections M-ere surprisingly good, the quality of the cut flowers and bulbs, especially hyacinths and polyanthus, being exceptional.
