CIVIC PROGRESS.

Another step in keeping with the steady development ot Palmerston North has been taken with the organising, at a meeting this week, of an association for the advancement of Terrace End. The new body has still to select its name, but its nomenclature will count for little alongside the keynote of its aims—progress—for which the entluisiasm shown at the meeting augurs well. The city, is now splendidly endowed with groups of residents imbued with the spirit of civic pride, and it is pleasing to c see that Terrace End is not behindhand. That the new group is offered much scope for service in the interests of the -.suburb was made clear by several speakers, and it is noted that in proffering advice they did so in a spirit of cooperation. The suggestions for beautification of the gravel pit and lining of the railway with suitable trees and shrubs will appeal to all nature lovers, as will the desire. to improve playing facilities. The pit lias been a blemish in the suburb for too long. Again, such subjects as an improvement to the water supply to Terrace End, better bus services, and better roads and footpaths provide _ scope for the association’s activities. The water supply, particularly to the higher levels, has never been satisfactory in summer, a point which prompted one speaker at the meeting to remark that he understood the pipes now conveying- the supply were providing for five times as many people as were residents when they were first laid. Whether that is so or not, attention to the subject is needed. Another speaker remarked the lack of tar-sealing ‘works at- Terrace End as compared with other parts of the city in recent times. Although the southern side of Main Street East has been tar-sealed, there is still the dusty portion from Fitzroy Street to the Napier Road crossing, and other streets which carry more traffic have an equal claim to sealing with some of the streets included in .the Council’s present works programme. The population of the city is growing and the desire to make Terrace End more attractive than ever is a commendable display of civic pride.
