FRENCH IN ALGERIA.
ARABS OPPOSED TO FASCISM. Professor G. P. Schmitt, professor of literature at the University of Algiers for 13 years, and who arrived in Sydney, the other day on a world tour, said that the Arabs, _ of whom there were many in Algiers, were against Fascism, chiefly because of the idea prevalent among them that Italy was their enemy. That idea arose from the latter’s conquest of Tripoli. Professor Schmitt said that Algeria was the hope of France, because of the opportunity it offered for colonial expansion. France did not care about religious or racial divisions. A colour bar was not recognised. The French and Arabs were very friendly.
