EXPORT OF TIMBER
TRADE WITH AUSTRALIA. CHRISTCHURCH, Sept. 25. Excellent propects for the timber industry in New Zealand this year were predicted by the Australian Trade Commissioner in New Zealand, Mr R. H. Nesbitt, in an interview. “This year,” said Mr Nesbitt, “I am sure New Zea-
land’s timber exports to Australia will reach record figures.” ; Mr Nesbitt said it was pleasing to note that New Zealand had expanded | considerably her export trade in tim-■ her in the last 18 months. The prin- : cipal increase had been in rimu from West Coast ports. If proper safeguards were maintained, there was no reason why this trade should not be increased.. j for tremendous quantities of rimu were I | being used in Australia. | : I Australia was looking to New Zea- 1 ! land for its supplies of timber, and mil-
lions of pounds of Australian money were invested in pinus insignis plantations in the Dominion. For Southland beech the prospects? were good, for this timber was needed in Australia, not only for motor-body building, but also in factories where it was used for such things as brush handles and cheese crates.
