RUGBY FOOTBALL.

HOROWHENUA UNION. Rev. Father Iliordan presided at this week’s meeting of the Horowlienua Rugby Union. The secretaries of the Foxton and Foxton Fire Brigade junior clubs wrote a joint letter stating that on account of members of both teams being engaged at the races last Saturday, they would be unable to play the final of the northern junior championship. Mr .T. Casey advised that prior to the time set down for the game to commence, Mr Devonshire advised him that Fire Brigade were turning out and asked if a referee would be present. Mr A. J. Devonshire stated that the secretary of the Fire Brigade Club had no authority from the committee or players of the club to write the letter which the uuion had received. Thirteen members of the Fire Brigade team arrived cn the field at the appointed time to play the game. There were no Foxton team players there so Fire Brigade kicked off and claimed the match. Mr J.. W. Bishop moved that 'Fire Brigade bo declared winners of 'the northern division of the junior championship. This was seconded by Mr Hooper and carried unanimously. The Levin Borough Council wrote in reference to the union’s application for a live year tenure of the Levin Park Domain with the right to make a charge on a number of days each year, and stated that it could see uo reason to make any alteration in tile present arrangement.—Received. It was decided to play the junior filial between Raliui and Fire Brigade at Levin on Saturday, and in the event of a drawn game at the end of the usual time an extra ten minutes to be played. Mr R. G- Henderson was appointed referee. Mr Casey stated that it must give till members of the management committee a great deal of pleasure when they considered the loyalty of Hie referees during the past season. They had always been willing to control the games and it had been a plcaure to work with them. The union might next year have to endeavour to bring in some more young referees and educate them in the rules of the game by talks and lectures.

WELLINGTON BEAT WANGANUI. Per Press Association. WANGANUI, Sept. 25. The Wellington Rugby representatives beat Wanganui to-day by 27 to 17. Wanganui had the best of the first spell and shortly after half time led 9—B ; but the superior fitness and combination of the Wellington team overran the home side in the end. For Wellington tries were scored by Wareham (3) Hansen, McNeile, McGreevey, and Wells (one each). Pollock converted two and Baldwin one. For Wanganui, Campbell scored two tries and Mclntyre and Davidson one each. Morgan converted one and kicked a penalty.
