SHORTAGE OF POTATOES.
CANTERBURY VALUES SOAR, HIGHEST FOR 35 YEARS. Per Press Association. ASHBURTON, Sept, 26. Unprecedented prices are ruling for potatoes in Ashburton. The demand from the North Island, and the short supply here, took the price to £l3 a ton to-day, the highest for over 35 years. For some time past Whites have commanded £6 10s and Dakotas £7 10s a ton, but in view of the lateness of the North Island new crop a heavy demand has been made by northern merchants and the price has been going up by 20s to 30s a ton each day in the past week. The price in 1902 was nearly £l3 and the highest till now was £lO, in October, 1928. It is anticipated that the demand will be maintained for at least a month and that the price will hold.
