DUST AND POLLENS.

A paper, delivered by Dr TI. M. Jay (Adelaide) to the ear, nose, and throat section of the B.M.A. Conference in Melbourne, produced an interesting discussion on the improvement which has been made in the technique of detecting substances which cause hay fever and allied diseases. Dr Jay, in his paper, discussing the sensitisation of the throat by pollens and dusts, said that it was often necessary to spend a considerable time in determining the substance which was affecting the patient. A horse hair or rubber mattress had often to be substituted for a wool mattress which caused sensitisation, and it was necessary sometimes for the patient to sleep out of doors to avoid dust from carpets. Dr Ivan Maxwell said that refined technique, in the last few years, had increased the list of substances which were known to cause hay fever by 30 per cent. He dealt with the detection by means of skin tests of substances which offended in individual eases.
