HOUSE OF JULIET
Proposals which have been under discussion for some time in Verona, Italy to create a Shakespearean museum in the house of Juliet in the Via del Cappello are now nearing completion. A committee has been formed with the object of providing for the foundation of the museum.
The news will bo received with great interest by many, oversea visitors to Verona, vlro have been disappointed to find the house which, according to legend, belonged to Romeo, closed in by slums. In the near future, pilgrilhs, who were accustomed to carry flowers to the tomb of the two lovers and to leave their visiting cards at the house of Juliet will find all things changed.
According to the Milan correspondent of the Loudon Times several proposals are now being considered by the newly formed committee. The first is to create a Shakespearean library in the house of Juliet, -where there would also be a collection of old prints and reproductions of pictures and drawings from all countries and of all ages referring to characters of the Shakespeare tragedy. It is also proposed to organise a Shakespearean festival, with a performance of two or three of the poet’s works in the Roman theatre, to arrange for a festival and annual Shakespearean lectures by Italian and foreign scholars, and to institute a biennial prize for the best Italian study of a Shakespearean subject. As soon as these proposals have been further considered and means for carrying them out devised, the intention is to appoint two committees, one in Italy and tire other in England. Their task would be to collaborate for the success of the festival, and to help to enrich the libraries and prints in the gallery in the museum.
