DUST NUISANCE

AT BUNNYTHOItPE, REQUEST FOR SEALED ROAD. Requesting that the strip of main highway from the railway crossing at Bunnythorpe to a point past the factory on the Feilding-Ashliurst Road be tar-sealed so as to obviate the dust nuisance at the factory, a deputation consisting of Messrs Cileveley, James and Robertson waited on the Oroua County Council, yesterday afternoon, on behalf of the Glaxo Company at Bunnythorpe. Mr Clevely pointed out that in the making of glaxo, purified air had to be driven through to a certain room and this air was taken into the factory from the side facing this road. Impurities in the air had to be avoided and, although the council kept the road in good older as a gravelled road, the more metal that was put on created more dust. At present the factroy was making casein and cheese, but it was contemplated that the manufacture of glaxo would be continued again in the future. When this was done it would mean that a much larger staff of men would be employed and also the making of less cheese would benefit other companies in a small way. " Mr James stated that when the drying of milk was started again a staff of about 40 men would be engaged in this work, as well as more men in the other activities of the company. Mr Robertson considered that the request was merely anticipating what would eventually take place on all main highways—their tar-scaling. Replying, the chairman (Cr. A. Campbell) said he was pleased to have received the views of the deputation. What had been said fully bore out the aims of the council to assist any move that would lead to greater employment and profitable industry. The council would have much pleasure in placing the request before the Main Highways Board, and he felt that he could assure the deputation that favourable consideration would be given to the request. _ The deputation then withdrew and, speaking to the matter, Cr. W. McLennan pointed out that earlier in the meeting the council had not seen its way clear to carry out Halcombe s request for a piece of sealed road, and he questioned whether it could do anything in this regard. Cr. T. Green said it would possibly help if the company would provide something towards the work, but the chairman did not see that this was called for. The piece of road was part of a main highway and the council would perhaps have to find a fourth of the cost. ~ • „„„ It was decided that the engined make an estimate of the cost of the work the council then to applv to the Main Highways Board for the approval of the work.
