WANGANUI RACES.

J BIG HANDICAP TO RURI. MIDIAN WINS THE SPRINT. A cold, wind made matters somewhat unpleasant for patrons at the opening day of the Wanganui Jockey Club's meotmg yesterday and, with the form provinir to bo somewhat tricky, a slight decrease 111 the totalisator returns resulted, the sum •iu 9.1 3 10s boin K handled as compared with £7596 10s for the opening day last year—a decrease of £553. The day's racing furnished some close and interesting finishes. Ruri winning the Marangai Handicap after a great battle up. the straight with Royal Banquet. In the Seafield Handicap Midian effected a surprise hy winning vcrv nicclv from Passion Fruit and Wet Tor, while in the Flying Handicap the northerner Galilee beat Slippery in a good fighting finish. TWO-YEAR-OLD PARADE. PROMISING YOUNGSTERS. Prior to the racing being entered unon, several two-year-olds, the majority of whom will no doubt contest the Debutante Stakes to-morrow, were sprinted over a couple of furlongs, six figuring in the first division and fivo in the second, Gay Doll, Haiongona, Black Fox, and Brilliancy declining their engagements. Moquctte, a chestnut filly bv Limond from Motley, displayed the family speed by being in front throughout in the first heat to win nicely bv a length from Imposture, another of the same sex bv Posterity from Impetjous, with the Awapuni filly Lavish close up. Jovial Prince a product of Laughing Prince and Mandane, who carried the colours of Mr N. Blackmore, of Palmerston North, was fourth with Mohua, who had been slow to move, ahead of Secadlcr In the second division the Woodviile-ti-aincd Karl, who claims Arausio as his sire, was in front throughout, winning by a short length from the Gay Shield—Fersio colt Gay Chief, with the Awapuni Mirth third. Then came the northerner Gallio, whose dam Prodice is a half-sister to Amnion Ra, and is herself a winner of the Great Northern Oaks.

A NORTHERNER’S SUCCESS. FLITACRE FINISHES ON. There wan only one defection from the Maiden Race, leaving a big field of 19 runners. Going Gay was installed a firm favourite from Entail and Fiitacrc, hut after showing the way right into tfhe ■ straight ihe favourite was beaten and • Flitacre ran to the front to beat Entail, i who caino from behind, by a length and a ‘ half. Prevail was badly left and Conversion was slow to move, whereas Going Gaj 1 ran to the front with Mowgli, Flitacre, | and Image ahead of Entheos and Entail. There was little change among the leaders ! right to the straight entrance where Going Gay drew away from Mowgli, only •to be immediately challenged by Fiitacro, and the northerner drew clear to win by a length and a half from Entail, who j finished strongly, while Begorrah put in ! a late claim to beat the favourite for third place by a head. The Image and Happy Landing were next to finish at j longer intervals.

MAGNIFICENT JUMPING. SOLOIST LEADS THROUGHOUT. Ruaforin was made favourite for the Okcfiu Hack Hurdles from Esteem, but the former’s fellow Hawera-trained Soloist outjumped and outpaced the opposition to win very easily. It was a striking performance. Soloist, Bay Sand, and Gold Cure went into the lead together, but Soloist wa.-. jumping the faster, and although Bay Sand momentarily wrested the lead passing throug the straight, Soloist was in charge going away from home where Ruaform ran up fast to join the loader, Esteem moving forward also. Turning across the top Soloist was four lengths ckar of Esteem, and although Esteem was fencing well lie could not make any impression on the leader, who won with something in hand by a length and a. half. There was a gap of over three lengths to Kaola with Gold Cure next.)

GAY BOY AVINS AGAIN. AN lAIPROVING SORT. The northerner Silver Brier was hacked down to a short price fur tho Putiki Hack Handicap, but the Silverado filly was never favourably placed at any stage and was well beaten at the finish, the winner proving to be Gay Boy who scored at Alarton. After breaking through the tapes, Mid Aero was the last to move at the actual despatch, Rompalong and Gay Roy racing to the front to take up the running from Blue Tiger, Mid Acre, and Sporting Song as they went away from home. Lady Eka ran up on the turn and she led Sporting Song and Gay Boy past the halfmile peg, the trio coming into the straight together. With heads straightened out for home Gay Boy ran to tho front, to beat Lady Eka, who was at a vory long price, by three-quarters of a length, with Blue Tiger, who had been hampered by Lady Eka coming over towards the rails, a length back. Sporting Song was fourth with Rust, who was wide out on the bend, ahead of Trackman.

THE FAVOURITE UNLUCKY. HURTS RUN ON RAILS. The defection of Wahine Nui from the, Marangai Handicap left only four horses to face the starter, and Royal Banquet was a £46 better favourite than Spiral with good support for Ruri. After mailing tho pace throughout Royal Banquet hung out coming into the straight, enabling Ruri to come through on tho rails to win by a head in a great finish. Royal Banquet jumped into tho lead to pilot Ruri and Spiral with Tres Sec bringing up the, rear as they went away Iron, homo. Going along tho back Spiral moved forward to attend me icader as they came across the top, but with Royal Banquet hanging out on the turn Ituri was able to work through and in a great finish ho held oil tho iavourite to win by a head with a gap o£ three lengths to Spiral.

A COMFORTABLE WIN. MIDI AN SURPRISES. Gold Mission, Slippery, Ruri, and Limulus were absentees from the SeaCeld Handicap, for which Passion Fruit was preferred to Severe. But a surprise was in store when Midian put in an appearance three furlongs from homo to win with something in reserve. Severe, after being prominent throughout, weakened over the final furlong, which doos not bode well for her prospects in the Guineas to-morrow. Gojden Ilair threw her rider at the jumpout and took no part in the race, Passion Fruit going to the front to lead Severe, Farmor West Tor, and Bunfight going: down the back. Bunfight moved forward to join Severe and the pair came across the top on terms ahead of Midian, Passion Fruit, Farmer, and Carfex, but before the straight was reached Midian had taken charge and he held off Passion Fruit in the run homo to win by three-quarters of ' a length with West Tor finishing on in third place a length back. Carfex, Fersen, Farmer, and Severe was the order thereafter. A CLOSE CALL. ALCHEMIC GETS HOME. Cclcrrimus, Chikara, Blue Garter, and Ring'ipoto were withdrawn from the Durio Hack Handicap, leaving 15 runners. Alchemic, who had been a winner at New Plymouth, was installed favourite from Lowcnbcrg, and while the favourite carried his backers through, ho had a narrow escape from defeat, the little fan-cied-Thane finishing fast to got to within a short head of the winner. Lady Ruler was the smartest to begin from Grand Score with Gold Gleam ahead o£ Alchemic, Thane, Lowcnbcrg,

and Mustang. Coming across the top Lady Ruler still had charge from Grand Score, Alchemic and Mustang, but the leader weakened jn the next furlong. Grand Score was first into the straight from Gold Gleam, but Alchemic immediately challenged to wrest the lead. However, in the last few strides Thane came fast to got to within a short head of Alchemic with Gold Gleam half a neck back. Lowenbcrg, alter being last two furlongs from home, finished fast to take fourth place with Hunting Cat and Grand Scoro next. GALILEE SCORES. FAVOURITE'S LATE RUN. Ilaut Monde, favourite for the Flying Handicap from Galileo and Slippery, was slow to begin, being well back in the early stages and bo could not make up (lie leeway in the final stages, Galileo and Slippery fighting out the issue for the northerner to finish the better of the pair. Galileo commenced smartly to take up the running from Mother Superior, Ifororata, Slippery, Refresher, and II Duco. Approaching the turn Slippery joined Galileo for the pair to turn into the straight ahead of Mother Superior with II Ducc and Refresher ahead of Ilaut Monde. The two leaders foughi it out all the way up tho straight, Galilee prevailing by a short half length with a gap of two lengths to Ilau fc Monde. RACING IN DETAIL.
