CRICKET

OLD BOYS CLUB. The annual meeting was held on "Wednesday of the Old Boys Cricket Club. The chair was occupied by Mr C. Eglinton. The resignations of two members were received ami eight new members were elected. . The report and balance-sheet (already published) were adopted on the motion of the chairman, seconded by Mr B. Trow. A discussion took place on the seemingly small number of old boys from the High School who joined the club each year, and it was reported that the matter had already been placed before the High School authorities. The chairman commented that the balance-sheet appeared to show quite a good position and if there was no extraordinary expenditure in the coming season the club should have healthy finances. The election of officers resulted: Patron, Mr T. B. Kodder; president, Mr F. J. Oakley ; vice-presidents, fifteen were elected; club captain, Dir G. Hawick; secretary-treasurer. Mr D. W. Spring; auditor. Mr B. Trow; management and selection committee, officers ex-officio and Messrs N. C. Pirie, N. Gallichan, and M. O’Keefe; . delegate to High School Old Boys’ Association, Mr Trow; delegates to the Manawatu Cricket Association, Messrs Hawick and F. Guinness. A vote of thanks was accorded Mr Spring for his work as secretary in the previous season. The secretary read a letter from the Manawatu Cricket Association in which it was advised that there had been a proposal to have the appointment of selectors altered under certain circumstances. Mr O’Keefe outlined the general position, saying that the proposal had been made by the committee of the Old Boys Club. The action of the committee was confirmed. Tuesdays and Thursdays were selected as the practice nights. It was agreed that a senior, a junior A, and a junior B team should be entered in the competitions. A recommendation to the management committee was passed to the effect that a set of rules should be drawn up to be submitted to a special general meeting at the beginning of the season. > The subscriptions were fixed at the same rates as those of last season. _ At the suggestion of Mr O’Keefe it

was agreed to have two practice wickets instead of one in the Coming season. It was decided that the names of unfinancial members should be forwarded to the management of the Manawatu Cricket Association after the defaulters had been given tlie opportunity of meeting arrears. The meeting closed with a vote of thanks to the Umpires’ Association, the hope being expressed that the association would long continue as a flourishing body, and a vote of thanks also to tlie chair.' UNITED CRICKET CLUB. ANNUAL REPORT. The report to be presented at' the annual meeting of the United Cricket Club reads, inter alia :—Your committee feels that it can look back with a certain amount of satisfaction on tlie results obtained. In addition to the senior XI tlie club for the first time for several seasons entered a team in the junior competition._ Although not successful in annexing either championship. the results wore most encouraging and the club can look forward to greater success in the coming season. Our congratulations are extended to the Palmerston Club, winners of the senior championship, the Combined Services Club, winners of the junior A competition, and to the High School team, winners of the junior B competition. Tlie senior XT finished third in the competition and but for several unexpected' reverses in the latter part of the season would have fiilen an even higher position. These reverses were tlie result of two factors—inattention to practice and the failure by some of the members of the team to appreciate the fact that a team cannot give of its best when playing short-handed or with substitutes.

The leading batting and bowling averages are as follow:-—Batting: A. S. H. Cutler, total of 462 runs (average 42); L. Coekerv, total of 173 runs (average 24.7); H. Palmer, total of 159 runs (average 21.4); L. T. J. Monteitli. total of 236 runs (average 21.4). Bowling: A, S. H. Cutler, 35 wickets (average 12.7); A. Jewett, 12 wickets (average 12.9); L. Cookery, 26 wickets, (average 14.4); H. Palmer, 11 wickets (average 18.8). Mr A. S. H. Cutler also had the distinction of scoring over 1060 runs in club and representative matches. "We congratulate him heartily on this excellent performance. We also wish to extend our congratulations to the following who represented Manawatu with credit in the Hawke Cup matches:—Messrs L. T. J. Monteith. W. A. Penman, and A. S. H. Cutler. Tlie junior XI, although having little success, had a thoroughly enjoyable season. It is pleasing to note that although several members of this grade entered upon their first season’s competition cricket they performed very creditably. The following finished up the season with excellent bowling and batting averages:—Messrs R. McGregor, J. Robb, C. Wilde, and J. Cushing, and to the first three we extend our congratulations on securing representative honours. The club’s finances are in a healthy state and the season’s working showed a surplus of income over expenditure, and when it is considered that the entry of an additional team necessitated heavy expenditure for materials _ this position must be regarded as highly satisfactory. Tt is also worthy of note that at the conclusion of the season not one members of the senior team remained unfinancial, which fact is extremely gratifying The committee wishes to express its appreciation of 'the services rendered by the officers of the club, the Press, and the ladies who assisted with the afternoon tea arrangements. We feel that our report would be incomplete without reference to the loss the club lias sustained by the death of Mr T. R. Moore. Since its inception tlie late Mr Moore has been one of the club’s keenest supporters and in the past season was unanimously elected an honorary vice-president. With liis passing the club and cricket generally has lost a supporter whose place will be hard to fill. With the advent of some new and young players and added keenness and enthusiasm your committee hopes tlie United Cricket Club will experience better fortunes in the 193036 season.
