CRIME PUNISHMENT.
PRESENT METHODS DENOUNCED
MELBOURNE, Sept. 12. Speaking on crime and delinquency at the medical sociological section ol the B.M.A. Congress, Dr. R. S. Ellery, one of Australia’s foremost psychiatrists denounced present methods ot dealing with criminals as a proud procedure of making the punishment fat the crime and productive only of evil. He denied that any judge could be described as unbiased. “Every judgment of a judge is tainted by Ins inhibitions and conflicts, which corrode his sub-conscious self. When he punishes a criminal he is punishing something criminal in his own mind. ’ Dr. Ellery did not subscribe to the view that punishment as at present known was a deterrent to wrongdoers. Ignorance and legal traditions produced a medieval attitude toward crime. Everyone possessed criminal tendencies and the germs of anti-social behaviour. Crime should be attacked by a study of child delinquency.
