LEAGUE FINANCES

DEFICIT AVOIDED. MORE ARREARS PAID. CONTRIBUTIONS REDUCED. (United Press-Association—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) (Times Cables.) Received September 13, 12.35 p.m. LONDON, Sept. 12. The Times’s Geneva correspondent says—M. Avenol at the Fourth Committee expressed the opinion that owing to the Secretariat’s policy of careful economy the League had not shown a deficit at the end of the year. Contributions of arrears received had risen from 3,800,000 Swiss irancs to 0,040,000. The unit contribution of each State was smaller despite the resignations of Germany and Japan.

The French delegate read a letter from M. Laval requesting that, in view of the French salary cuts, the League reduce the contributions of members 10 per cent. M. Avenol replied that the League expenses had been reduced 17 per cent. ; consequently, the contributions of members m 1930 had been reduced more than 10 per cont. If the revenue was forthcoming more regularly, further reductions might be considered.
