EXTRACTS FROM “ ST\NDARD.” SEPTEMBER 12, 1905. Distress had been caused to residents at. Mitcheltown, Wellington, by an individual who posed at night as a ghost and suddenly appeared before people. He would throw open his coat and show a chest covered with phosphorus. . The Minister of Health had been asked whether lie would consider the adoption of a Swedish scheme under which al money collected from the sale ot special stamps would be devoted to lighting tuberculosis. The Minister stated that the matter was well worthy of consideration. The German cruiser Secad'lei had grounded on Kent Rocks, near Singapore A New Zealand moat shop which had been opened at Aston-undcr-Lync,_ near Manchester, was doing splendid business. It was mentioned that there was a physical culture school, with 75 members, flourishing at Mangatainoka. The Foxton Athletic Club had decided that the value of the prizes to be given at the next gathering should be £IOO. The Italian Government had decided to devote £IO,OOO to the relief of distress following on a disastrous earthquake. It was feared that 2000 were dead. The King had donated £4OOO.
