FARMING NEWS.

RURAL RAKINGS. The mortality among lambs, nr; a result of the bitterly cold weather last week, is reported to have been fairly heavy in South Wairarapa. In Dalgety’s review of tho wool sales in Australia it is staled that there are hopes of a brighter future for growers. The almost complete clearance of the 1934-35 season’s clip is emphasised as a matter for congratulation. A farmer near Hillston, N.S.W., who had had mysterious losses of lambs, discovered that they’,- had been killed by pigs.

The recent cable saying that- the Home Go\ eminent had set up a Development Board in connection with the pig industry means that the Government has curried out the schomo proposed to it by the Pigs and Bacon Margeting Boards (says and exchange). Under the Agricultural Marketing Act of 1951 producers of primary and secondary agricultural products were empowered to set up their own organisations (marketing boards) with statutory powers for orderly marketing. The question of the eradication of hidibidi was referred to at a recent meeting of the Southern Hawke’s Bay Provincial Executive of the Farmers’ Union. The opinion was expressed by Mr A. Dickies that the best method of stamping out bidibidi was by sub-divisional fencing and rotational grazing. Mr W. M. Übadwick acquiesced, saying that crushing by cattle was a very effective means of dealing with the pest. “You can crush bidi-bidi out by' sub-divisional fencing and relational grazing, but that- means capital expenditure,” said the president (Air J. Livingston). There were some farmers to-day who were not in a position to do this. Crushing was quite all right on good land, but it would not be effective on inferior soil.
