(From Our Own Correspondent.) SHANNON. Aug. 26. Despite very cold wintry weather there was the uausl good attendance at the August meeting of the Shannon Womens Institute. The main part of the afternoon was devoted to a Dominion conference report from the president (Airs C. Easton), which was listened to with interest, 31rs Easton being accorded a hearty vote of thanks. 3lrs Blaikic’s account of a visit to the Blind Institute gave members food for much thought and all were agreed to do something to help with the splendid work. After Mrs Picard commenced a demonstration on [line noodle work which is to bo continued at the next meeting, good business was done on the newly revived sale stall, which it is hoped to hold each meeting. Mrs Owen was the winner of a large iced fruit cake, presented by the president. The competition for a fancy tea cosy resulted ; 31 rs DickhofT 1, Airs Boyis 2, 3lrs F. Jamieson, junr., 3. The juniors’ beret parade resulted : 3lisscs J. Blaikie 1 % G. Burling 2, and C. Pentecost 3. Next month there is to lie a roll call, A Motto”; the points competition for both seniors and juniors is for the best collection and arrangement of spring flowers and foliage in a jar. It is hoped also to hate an appropriate gardening talk and a special effort is to he made for federation funds per medium of a sale stall. 3lrs H. Blaikie has returned from an extended visit to Auckland. . . 3lrs B. J. Braun paid a week-end visit to relatives in Wellington. 3liss Grace 3lorgan was able to return to Shannon on Saturday and is making a steady recovery from her recent operation. The loeal school closed on Friday for the autumn vacation. Shannon seniors defeated Punahau in the first game for the Nash ( up competition (Rugby) hv 20 poinls to 3. the match being refereed by 3lr Neville, and played on the Shannon Domain. Punahau were not able to field a full strength team and the cold and strong wind made the game far from interesting. During July the District Nurse made 420 visits, an average of nearly 14 per day. On Friday evening tho Women’s Division of tho Farmers’ Union entertained, farmers children to an evening in the Druids’ Hall. Games and dancing were enjoyed by all. The children were trained for the dancing by 31 rs I. .McDonald and .31 r S. Burlier conveyed to her tho thanks of the members of the union and presented her with a small presentation. Balloons, paper caps, and lollies were handed to all rhe ehidreu. The music was supplied by 31 r Judd. The final game for the Hamilton Go.f Cup was played at Otaki at the . week-end, Otaki winning by 7 games to 5. T he cup is competed for by Shannon, Otaki, Foxton and Levin clubs", the latter being the winners on the aggregate points for the season.
