WOODVILLE, Aug. 26.

A pleasant gathering took place on Friday afternoon when Air G. W. Shine, headmaster of the Woodville District High School, who is taking up the position of headmaster of the r le Papapa School, Auckland, was tendered a farewell, the school children being assembled. Air it. It. Johnston said that all would regret Air Shine’s early transfer, and he knew the parents would agree. However, it was promotion for Air Slane and the speaker hoped he would continue climbing tne ladder of progress. The best wishes of the committee were conveyed to Air and Airs Slane and their son John, Air Johnston wishing them success and prosperity. I lie Mayor, Air H. P. Horne, said the town would lose a good citizen. He had been greatly surprised to learn that Mr Slane was moving on, but it was realised that in the teaching profession it was necessary to move about to secure advancement and experience. The speaker felt sure Air Slane would carry with him the best wishes of lus many friends in the town. To Air and Mrs Slane lie wished future health and happiness. Air C. J. Bishop, on behtiJl of tlie staff, expressed regret at Mr Slane’s departure, and conveyed to him and Mrs Slane the best wishes of the staff for the future. Air Slane expressed his thanks for the remarks of the speakers, and for the kindness that had been shown him since coming to Woodville. Farewells were not happy affairs, and while lie was glad to he going to Auckland, where his family resided, lie could not but remember the happiness lie had enjoyed in Woodville. It was with the greatest regret that he said farewell to the boys and girls, the staff, the committee, and residents of Woodvi lit*. Cheers and musical honours were given by the children for Mr and Airs Slane. 'On Saturday evening, members of the ‘Woodville Fire Brigade held a social, when the opportunity was taken to farewell Fireman It. Olsen, who leaves Woodville this week. A happy time was spent in playing cards, and musical items were given by Airs Leslie, Air S. Fannan. Junior Foreman Charles and Firemen Hurley and Olsen. The winners of the cards tourney were Aliss Ilerion and Air Hanaray, while Air and Airs Anslow won the consolation prize. In presenting an oak tea wagon, to Fireman Olsen, Superintendent It. AlcNeil expressed tho brigade’s regret at losing such a valuable member and thanked him for his good work in his years’ service. Junior Foreman Charles endorsed the superintendent’s remarks, and Mr Olsen briefly replied. Air IT. Etheridge, of Alasterton, has commenced duty at the Woodville Post Ollico, in place of Air R. Olsen, who has been transferred. Air G. Carnie, of Ohakune, who has been appointed stationmaster at Woodville, took over his new duties to-day.
