AUSTRALIA’S TRADE

SHIFT FROM U.S.A. TO JAPAN. AMERICAN” ANXIETY. The New York Sun, in a leading article, says:—“One of the striking aspects of world commerce to-day is the swing of Australian trade to Japan at the threatened expense of the United States.

“The attitude of Japan is that m the Australian market it merits preference over the United States, inasmuch as it takes nearly 12 per cent of the total exports of the Commonwealth, as compared with less than two per cent taken by this country. The drift of Australian trade towards Japan is compelled by conditions rather than follows a desire for places. Commonwealth officials are in a difficult situation. The suggestion has bean made that a trade mission should

be sent to Australia from the United States. That members would receive a cordial welcome is a foregone conclusion because of Australia s deej> and genuine friendship with the United States but whether any significant results would be accomplished in view of the natural difficulties is another matter. However, the preservation of this country’s export trade to Australia. which is worth about 50,000,000 dollars a year, is certainly worth all possible efforts.”
