CHERRY KING SUPPORTED. The outstanding move in the discussions oi. the spring handicaps in Sydney on August 9 was the support for Cherry King, a recent arrival from New Zealand, who is in G. Price’s stabler. The support did not occasion a great outlay, for the quotation was expansive, but there has been a considerable shrinkage, says a Sydney writer. Probably the move was influenced by the fact that Cherry King last season beat Princess Doreen over one mile in the Blanket Handicap. He had 7.7, and Princess Doreen 8.12, but he will have had to improve considerably to again turn the tables on the mare, for in the Epsom Handicap Cherrv King is in receipt of cn.y 71b from Princess Doreen. Cherry King is by Chief Ruler from Cherry Pie, and altogether has won eight races in the three seasons he has raced, five of them being last season, when he showed good form in tho summer. Cherry King, who is a full-brother to tne one-time Awapuni performer Chief Cook and a half-brother to the southerner Cherry Queen, met with an injury one morning when proceeding to the Mart on track, and it was then feared that he would not race again. However, it was evident that when he was sent across to Australia that the five-year-old had come round alright. As a member of L. G. Morris s stable, Cherry King was displaying a fund of promise when the mishap overtook him p.nd, provided he is quito himself again, he should pay his way across the Tasman.
