(From Our Own Correspondent.) SHANNON. Aug. 21. On Thursday evening six players from the local Chess Club visited Levin, and although they were defeated bv 5 games to 1 they thoroughly enjoyed the trip, being most hospitab'y entertained. The Shannon branch of the Farmers’ Union is making every effort to sustain the continued inforest. of its members. On Thursday evening, Mr Denize, stock inspector, gave an instructive address on animal husbandry which was followed with interest by all present. The speaker was accorded a vote of thanks. The executive are endeavouring to arrange further similar lectures in the farmers’ own interest and it is hopod that members will give the meetings their full support.

The postmaster advises that the 11.15 a.in. mail to Palmerston North, which was deleted some months ago. has now been reinstated.

Owing to heavy rain, the local golf links were closed for play on Saturday and the match between Foxton and Shannon had to bo abandoned.

The annual meeting of the Shannon Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club was hold on Friday evening, Mr \V. Hadford presiding over a good attendance. The following officers were elected: Patrrn. Mr A. E. Hyde; president, Mr E. Barber; vice-president, Air D. Cole: secretary, Air C. M. Layton; treasurer, Mr A. E. Trclncwan; manager, Air AY. Kadford; referee, Air A. Gillespie. A vote of. thanks was accorded the secretary for his efforts in sustaining interest in the club during the winter periods. The Mayor and the town clerk will attend the conference of local bodies at Palmerston North next. Tuesday, arranged by the Palmerston North Chamber of Commerce, with a view to formulating a scheme for the prevention of motor accidents.
