KIMBOLTON HIGHWAY.

"With the heavy and persistent rain and the reconstruction work which has been in progress on the Kimbolton Road from Cheltenham to Kiwitea, the highway is at present in an exceptional state of mitddi.ness. Soft mud covers the road in parts where the surface has been torn off in the remaking of the grade, while in other parts gaping holes filled with water mark the surface to an extent that makes the motorist exercise considerable care. The road was referred to at yesterday’s meeting of the Kiwitea County Council, when the consulting engineer to the council (Mr Sladden) stated that the weather had given the contractors a trying time. The progress of the work had been considerably interfered with, while all the work had been carried out with much inconvenience. One point of advantage had been that the newly formed road surface had settled clown wonderfully well with the constant soakings it had received, and it was only where tho tops of the “switch-backs” in tbe. road had been graded off" to improve visibility and the' grade, that the formation had cut tip right through to the clay beneath. Air Sladden stated that he was quite satisfied with the progress the contractors were makjng, and felt sure that an excellent highway would ultimately result Councillors concurred in the remarks of the engineer, although tlicv deplored the present interference with traffic on the road.
