WHEELBARROW DERBY

CHARITY DAY ATTRACTION. Arrangements were furthered at last night’s meeting of the Manawatu Rugby Union in connection with the “Wheelbarrow Derby” to be held on Saturday, when tho union will stage the St. Patrick’s (Silverstream) and Sacred Heart (Auckland) Rugby match at the Showgrounds as a Charity Day attraction. It is intended to stage the “Wheelbarrow Derby” prior to tiie match, the race starting from the Soldiers’ Memorial, to Rangitikei Street and Cuba Street, and finishing in front of the grandstand. The candidates for electoral honours in both tho Palmerston and Manawatu seats were invited to participate, and Messrs A. E. Mansfoid and J. Hodgens havo intimated their readiness to assist. Air J. A. Nash, M.P., wrote regretting his inability to do so, while Mr W. J. Crawford stated that as he was now contesting the Rangitikei seat he presumed he would be automatically disqualified. The City Council advised that it would supply the necessary barrows, which would be awaiting their charges at the starting point. Messrs H. J. Hickey, E. AY. Low and P. 0. Skoglund were appointed a sub-committee to arrange the final details. Six- candidates for honours are expected to lino up. The Rugbv clubs are to supply the pushers and the Referees’ Association the extra passengers. . Mr J'. AY. Aisher was appointed starter and Air A. M. Ongley (the union’s president) judge. The race is timed to start at about 2 p.m.
