OPERATIONS AT AWAPUNI.

youngsters to the fore. ('By “Binocular.") It was unfortunate that steady rain should have set in on Wednesday night, tor the tracks at Awapuni had been steadily drying. As a result of the nature of the going there was not a great deal attempted by mentors yesterday. Note Issuo (L. Pine) was very anxious to bo given her head, but her rider held her in check over the first three furlongs. She was allowed to bowl along over the last three, coming homo in 44 2-ssec. Evasion (W. E. Pino) jumped away beyond the mile post to stride over a round without being fully extended. She ran the first five furlongs in 1.13 1-5 and the full distance in 1.56— -time which could have been improved upon. Kitty Quinn (W, E. Pine) and the Colossus—Semplice chestnut, gelding Pylon (L. Pine) jumped away from the half mile peg and, after a slow initial furlong, completed their task in 57 2-ssecs, the former being clear at the post. Bazaino (W. Broughton) strode along in her customary free style in 55 y 2-5. While this brother to Golden Chant has failed to stay on meantime, it was not till the latter was a four-year-old that she tan more than a merry five furlongs. Happy Hunting (W. Broughton) was taken through to the Wellington meeting where she was accorded only one start. She is revelling in her work and completed a three lurlongs task in 40sec in good style. Galliyanter (Thomas), who is showing steady improvement a 3 a result of his rocent racing and track operations, ran five furlongs hi 1.12 2-ssec. The Gay Lad goldin has lost a good deal of his surplus condition and is now reaching racing shape. Of the candidates who raced at Trcn, tham, Cardhu ana Hunting Jav were restricted to pacework in the “bull ring.” Although the former is stated to have struck himself at Trentham, thero does not appear to be anything materially wrong with him. Hunting Lodge was worked on one of the inner grass tracks and Round Score on the sand. Bodyline is back among the ranks of the workers, but while the little fellow is on the mend after his mishap at Levin, he is still slightly sore. His work is being restricted to trotting in the meantime.

Taumau, who has been suffering from a bruised foot, is again in work, but his tasks are light in the meantime. Sweet Music was recently blistered, but. the Nigger Minsterl —Kilmiss filly is again among the late workers. Their mentor, E. W. Watson underwent an operation to a cartilego in the knee some days ago and is. still in hospital. TEAM FOR SYDNEY. G. W. New has finalised arrangements to leave for Sydney on August 2, but the members of his team are meantime somewhat uncertain. It was originally intended that the team would comprise Legatee, who figures in the Derby and the Melbourne Cup, Symcony, Hunting Mars, Red Hunting,' and the two-year-old by Posterity—Episode who has been named Kinsfolk. Unfortunately, on the morning when Boudoir dropped dead on the tracks, Symcony took fright and she wrenched a knee slightly. Hunting Mars, who is a heavily-topped horse, met with an injury in the paddock and they may be defections. YOUNGSTERS NAMED. Several of the rising two-year-olds were given barrier schooling yesterday morning, Red Hunting being accompanied by Dawning Light (Arausio —Aurette) and Kinsfolk in the first batch. .Under the direction of Mr D. Stevens, track supervisor, thev were given a good insight into the business before being sent away two or three times. Later, Mirth (Laughing Prince—Mandano) and Jovial Princo (Laughing Prince—Thrift) were also taken to the barrier. In each case the youngsters behaved themselves very well. Mr C. Boyle has brought into work a chestnut colt by Hunting Song from Tino Atua,' being th'us a full-brother to Hunter’s Moon, who was quartered atAwapuni for a brief period prior to being sent with the southerner Compris to India. Although a little leggy meantime, he comes from a speedy family. J. P. COYLE’S ADDITION. Last year J. P. Coyle began the- new season with a smart youngster in Severe, and tho indications are that he will have another smart one of Mr G. M. Currie’s breeding to carry his colours in the new term. This rising two-year-old is another of the Limond family from Imprudence, and she will race as Lavish. Tho mentor had his newcomer by Night Raid at the tracks for the first occasion yesterday morning. Although rising five-year-old, Merry Knight as he is called has had plenty of work on a station in the north and he looks in excellent order to commence a preparation. As he comes from Merry Vale, by Paladin from tho Boniform mare Bonrina, he has breeding to commend him and, judged on looks, he promises to be a good type of animal. GENERAL NOTES. Sisterina. tho surprise winner of the final event at Trentham on Saturday, was bred by Mr F. Holmes, who sold her to

her present Greymouth owner, one condition being that she was to revert to Mr Holmes when her racing career terminated. Her dam Matty Carling is by Kilbroney from Marta, by Martagon. The big field of 26 candidates has been entered for the Rangitane Plato at the Manawatu winter meeting, and included therein are such promising sorts as Earl Colossus, Blue Mauritius, Chalice, Delysia, Red Hunting, Jean Batten, Rompalong, Garter Red, etc. There is material for a splendid race. Of tho entrants’for tho Manawatu Hunt Cup 12 months ago, High Society is tho only one to again figure in 1935. The field on this occasion reads materially stronger with such performers as Comctra, The Ranger, Dozic, The Drone, Petrarch, Hunting Boy, Miss Pango, Waitaunaha, Taura Lad, among the 20 horses entered. Quite a classy field is promised in tho hurdles contest at the winter meeting of the Manawatu Racing Club. Included are such performers as Karangapai. Carfox, High Grader, Saltspray, Tudor, Invictus, Swift and Suro, Billy Boy, Brigadoro, Manawatu, and Gold Cure, the. majority of whom attended last week’s fixture at Trentham.

There aro 16 entrants for the Broadway Hack Handicap—a mile and a quarter event—but there will he two defections at least, Boudoir and Bold Jim having unexpectedly gone the way ‘of all flesh. There is, however, the material there to ensure an interesting contest. Many trainers with youngster in the course of preparation are lamenting tho action of the Marton Jockey Club in deleting the two-year-old handicap in favour of an amateur riders’ event. In the past tho Marton meeting has ushered in the spring activities at this end of the island and it has furnished a good lino on the form of many youngsters who usually went on to the Debutante Stakes at Wanganui. The presentation of the cup by the Duke of Gloucester was directly responsible for the amending of the programme, but the club may find that the two-year-old event was also responsible for bringing to the meeting a number of older horses, particularly from northern stables. -Actually, amateur races are not viewed with favour by tho majority of racegoers. Some excitement was caused at Victoria Park last Saturday when it was reported that the stewards had inquired into 11. Reed’s handling of Silver Ring in the Flying Handicap, first division. Silver Ring, who won the last Epsom Handicap, after being slow to commence in tho Flying Handicap, was hard ridden by Reed in tho straight, but could only finish eighth. In his preliminary he exhibited symptoms of soreness. At the inquiry R. W. King, trainer of Silver Ring, told the stewards that Silver Ring had suffered recently with foot trouble, and this accounted for his inability to hit out with freedom in tho early stages of his race. After hearing tho parties, tho stewards decided to take no action.

Sensational happenings marked the Grand National Hurdle Race at Flemington on July 5. Full Charge, who started the hottest favourite in the history of the race, lost his rider at the first hurdle. The winner, Fulham, was hooted by. the crowd. The riderless favourite continued in the race, jumped every hurdle, and finally ran off at the hurdle in front of the members’ sland. Fulham, staging a reversal of his earlier form at Moonee Valley, won a most exciting race from Dress Suit and Mystic Peak. Menohk's scratching on tho course, reduced the field 1o seven, the smallest in the history of the race. Full Chargo had 10.0 —a record low weight for the No. 1 in the race, and his price was also the shortest of any starter in a Grand National Hurdles.
