DECISION TO RETIRE.
FARMERS’ UNION PRESIDENT. TRIBUTES TO AIR POLSON. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, July 16. When the conference of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union resumed this afternoon the president, Air W. J. Poison, ALP., said that ho would be unablo to continue in office for another term and asked to be relieved of tho work. ; In making this intimation, Air Poison said he realised that just now was perhaps a bad time to swap horses in midstream in view of the reorganisation proposals. He did not want delegates to think ho was running away from the job. He was prepared to work for the next two or three months in the efforts to reorganise the union, but it was impossible for him to continue for any length of time. That being so, he would like the conference to nominate a younger man to take his place. Air IT. E. Blydo (North Taranaki) said ho thought it was the wish of the conference that Mr Poison should.reconsider his decision.
Voices: Hear, hear. Mr Blydo said he thought it would be nothing short of a calamity if Mr Poison left tho helm during the next twelve months. He suggested that lie be relieved of some of tho work by the appointment of a vice-chairman. Mr Poison said he did not think there was any necessity to discuss the question at the moment. Ho just wanted to warn delegates of his decision. The position was that he was really unable to continue for health reasons, and he would prefer that someone be appointed in bis stead. Tho matter was not discussed further. It was decided that nominations tor the election of officers close to-mor-row night.
