The British lawn tennis championships commenced at Wimbledon to-day. The results of the matches, in which the New Zealanders shared the successes, are as follow : MEN’S SINGLES. First Round. Van Ryn beat Turnbull, ,6—2, 6—3, McGrath beat Allison, 6—4, 6—3, 7 7—5. Crawford beat Brugnon, 6—3, 6—l, 6—4. Hopman beat Freshwater, 6 —l, 7—5, 6—o. Malfroy (New Zealand) beat Choy (China), 6—2, 6—2, 6—l. Stedman (New Zealand) beat Sturgeon (Britain), 6—3, 6—o, 6—l. Andrews (New Zealand) beat David (Britain), 6 —l, 7—5, 6—l. , Budge beat Wilile, B—6, 6—2, 6 —l. Wood beat Itoli, 6 —2, 6- —2 6 —o. Perry beat llainville (Canada), 6—l, 6 6—3. Austin beat Avory, 6 —3, 6—l, 6—3. Borotra beat Henkel, 6—4, I—6, 8— 2—6, 6—2. Hecbt beat Bernard, 6—4, 2—6, 57, 6 —4, 7—5. Quist beat Partridge, 6—2, 6—l, 7 5. Boussus beat I. G. Collins, I—6, 6 2—6, 6—4, 6—l. Other winners include Menzel, Maier, Hughes, Sharpe. Cramm, Caska, Tuckey, Palmieri, and Yamagishi. The tournament began m a heat wave, tempered by a breeze. The courts were exceptionally well grassed, but bad a good pace considering the recent wet weather. TURNBULL’S DEFEAT. Turnbull, playing on the outer court, opened the Australian programme against Van Ryn. Quickly exposing the inconsistency of Turnbull’s backhand, and scoring freely with punishing forehand drives, Van Ryn took the first sc t 6—2. Turnbull repeatedly overdrove. Stronger serving and improved driving enabled Turnbull better to fight in the second set, but lie was unable to counter the American’s fierce serving and all-round severity, as a result of which Van Ryn won the set 6—3, displaying great judgment in lobbing. Van Ryn continued to force Turnhull into errors on his backhand and easily won the match. >. Perry was in exuberant mood, vanquishing llainville in forty minutes. McGRATH SPARKLES.

The match of the day was between McGrath and Allison. The former played bis best tennis of the tour. Driving pungeiitly and lobbing with discretion, McGrath kept a beautiful length. He frequently passed Allison when the American came to the net. The fourth set was extraordinary. Allison led s—o and hold set-point, which lie lost with a double-fault. McGrath, who was apparently content to drop the set, then changed his mind and went all out and, by vigorous driving and volleying, won seven games in a row. " McGrath received an ovation tor eliminating the fifth seeded player, a surprising but well-deserved achievement. Wood showed that he is a serious contender for Crawford’s place as a semifinalist by brilliantly defeating the tenth seeded player, Itoli, in straight sets. Crawford, in confidently defeating Brugnon, showed signs of returning to form. . Quist, with ecpial case, defeated Partridge. Apart from McGrath s triumph the only other noteworthy events were Bossus’s narrow escape and Borotra’s cunning resistance to ago, the heat and fatigue wearing out Henkel. INTENSE HEAT. OVATION FOR PERRY. (British Official Wireless.) Received June 25, 11.22 a.m. RUGBY, June 24. At the opening of the Wimbledon championships the temperature at one time exceeded 84 degrees. Perry was in the first match on the centre court and received a great ovation from an enormous crowd of enthusiasts.
