CONSOLIDATION MOVE.
DOMINION HERD TESTING. Requests recently placed before the Executive Commission of Agriculture by the management committee of the Dominion Group Herd Testing Federation were discussed in committee at the annual meeting of the federation to-day, in Palmerston North, by Mr A. H. Cockayne, assistant DirectorGeneral of the Department of Agriculture, The delegation to the Commission asked for statutory powers to prevent break-aways from the - federation with the resultant formation of other testing groups, so that all testing would come under the federation, and also that statutory powers be given to the federation for the protection of its present calf-marking system. At the close of Mr Cockayne’s address motions were presented to the meeting giving the management committee power to bring about a reorganisation with a view to the consideration of all herd testing in New Zealand and the authority also to deal with other items placed before the Commission. Dealing with the subject in his report the president, Mr G. H. Bell, Oakura, Taranaki, said: “In view of the importance of. the question, a special meeting of the federation’s management committee was held in Wellington on February 12 and 13 last. The committee was unanimously of the. opinion that the recommendations of the Commission regarding the setting up of a Herd Testing Council are in the best interests of the industry as a whole. It was felt, however, that if active co-operation by the breed societies in the co-ordination of the different svstems of testing cannot be obtained. that there should be a forward movement. at least to the extent of strengthening the central, executive or the federation. A resolution along these lines was submitted to the central executive on February 13 and was considerecl by them that day. j lie central executive endorsed the general principles of the resolution and appointed a deputation to wait on and confer with the Executive Commission of Agriculture at the earlist possible opportunity. This conference took place in Wellington on June 2 when the Executive Commission gave the deputation a very sympathetic hearing.
