MOCK ELECTION.

TOWNSWOMEN’S GUILD. With a mock election of a Mayor and city councillors as the principal business, there was a very large attendance at the monthly meeting of the Townswomen’s Guild held at the Empire Hall yesterday. “Policy speeches” were given by the candidates, the two for the Mayoralty being allowed five mirur.es and the 14 for councillorship three. Much amusement was caused when the speakers touched on topics of the day. their “election addresses” being very well given. In the unavoidable alwence of Mr J. R. Hardie (town clerk) the position of returning officer was taken by Mr A. E. Manslord (Mayor) and Messrs W. McDonald and A. Newlands were the scrutineers. Mrs M. Aitchison was returned as Mayor and duly installed and invested with the robes and jewel of office by the returning officer, who “offered his congratulations and good wishes for a successful term of office.” In returning thanks, Mrs Aitchison invited Al'iss Cranston, the defeated candidate. to fulfil the position of Mayoress. Miss Cranston was presented with a bouquet made by members of the ga'dening circle.

The election of a council of seven resulted in the return of the following:—Miss M. Grant. Mesdames Spraggon, Woodroofe, J. Davidson, W. F. Field, C. Turnbull and H. Sinclair, the other candidates being Mesdames How ley, H. Palmer. D. Evans, C. L. Graham. W. G. Black, Anderson and J. Gai'de Grimshaw. The councillors were required to take the necessary oath and all returned thanks. Hearty votes of thanks were accord-ed-the returning officer and scrutineers. A vote of thanks was also passed to Mr J. R. Hardie whose preparatory work had done a great deal toward .ensuring the success of the undertaking. An unexpectedly heavy poll kept the scrutineers busy until after the fall of dusk, but the time was passed in community singing, Mrs E. B. Watson being the leader. Mesdames H. L. Hartog and W. M. Tapp had decorated the stage in a most artistic manner, bowls of autumn leaves, early spring bulbs and branches of oranges and lemons and almtilons against a background of greenery creating a delightful effect.

A special welcome was given by Mrs A. E. Manslord, who presided. to the following new members: Mesdames P. Davidson, J. Fleck, D. A. Speedy, J. Sweeney, T. H. Davidson, J. Wilson Mills, Yelverton, H. B. Reid, AY. A. Ferguson, J. Spinlev, Misses A. Soundy and E. E. Drake. The hostesses welcoming members at the door were Mesdames M. Aitchison and A. M. Ongley. the tea hostesses being Mesdames T. J. Rodgers, AY. G. Black, Vaughan, James, Peters, and Miss C. Jamieson. An invitation was received from the Hastings Townswomen’s Guild for six members to attend their birthday party on July 11. The reports of the activities of the various circles were presented by the following conveners: Arts and crafts, Mrs Renwick; play-reading, Mrs J. Davidson; gardening. .Ai rs AYoodroofe; civics, Miss Giant. The hostesses appointed for July were Mesdames W. (Mutts, <.e Luen, Stewart, and Lee. Airs Mansford made an appeal for helpers to assist in making paper flowers for the charity ball, generous response being forthcoming. The meeting passed a resolution of sympathy with Airs C. H. Cummins in her illness, and decided to forward to her, in hospital, the best flowers in the hall. AA'EDGING. AIcNAE—SIGNAL. A quiet wedding was solemnised at the Apiti Presbyterian Church last AA’ednesday, when Lillian Alona, elder daughter of Air E. Signal and the late Airs Signal, of Apiti, was married to Reginald son of Air A. It. AlcNae, also of Apiti. The ceremony was performed by Rev. A. F. Stewart, and the wedding music was played by Aliss Paterson. The bride, who was given away by her father, was daintily attired in a wedgewood blue chevron ensemble with trimmings of plaid taffeta, and blue felt hat to tone. There were two bridesmaids. Alias r.Tav Thomason and Miss Vita Signal. The former was dressed in a leaf brown wool crepe tunic suit with hat and gloves to match, while the latter wore a - brown afgalaine Marina ensemble with hat, shoes , and gloves to tone. The bridegroom was attended by Air L. Duffy. KITCHEN EVENING. PARTY AT CHELTENHAAI.

Miss D. Murray, -whose marriage to Mr D. Capstick, of Itongotea, takes place shortly, was entertained at a kitchen evening by her friends from Palmerston North, Itongotea, Sandon and Cheltenham. The party was held at Cheltenham, Mr and Mrs Branch being the hosts. The guests of the evening were greeted with musical honours when they entered, and later had the same pleasure conferred upon them again. Suitable decorations had been carried out in the large dining-room, and a most enjoyable time was spent in dancing, games, and musical items. At an opportune moment Mr Branch asked Miss Murray to accept the many presents that had been brought her, these langing from all the necessary equipment of a kitchen to articles of furniture, the young couple being most appreciative of the kindness shown them.A supper that was much enjoyed was served by. the ladies of the district and music for dancing was contributed by a number of those present. WOMEN’S ALLIANCE. COMMEMORATIVE STAMPS. The Turkish Government has issued a special collection of stamps to commemorate the first great meeting of women which took place in Turkey recently, that of- the International Alliance of Women. It is stated that this action is unique, and constitutes a real event in the history of philately, for never before have stamps been issued in acknowledgement of feminine achievement, and in order to pay a tribute to women workers of outstanding merit. The stamps present portraits of Kemal Attaturk (the liberator of Turkish women), of Mrs Chapman Catt (the founder and hon. president of the International Alliance of AVomen), and also of the six women to whom the Nobel Prize has been awarded, Madame Curie (science), Grazia Deledda, Selma Lagerlof, and Sigrid TTndset (literature), Jane Addams and Bertha \ r on Suttner (peace). Then five stamps display symbolic activities ot women aviator, police woman, farmer, teacher and typiste. and three stamps women voters casting their votes. There is also a picture of the Vildiz Palace at Istanbul, where the International Congress was held, and, lastly, an Alliance Badge.
