TABLE TENNIS

MANAWATU ASSOCIATION. The following is the championshi table of inter-club matches at. the end of the first round, conducted by the Mauawatu Table Tennis Association.

NOTES AND COMMENTS. The Takaro teams are proving very formidable opposition this season. In the A and B grade divisions their teams to date have not suffered defeat. C. McLaren, a Manawatu representative player who has been absent from the district, has received a transfer from Masterton to Marton. His keenness has resulted in his appearance for the Takaro Club. His recent form, however, is not the convincing form of two seasons ago. A table tennis exhibition was staged at the recent Winter Show. Keen' interest was evinced by a large attendance of spectators. The players taking part were Miss L. Hughes v. D. Murray, R.. Buchanan v. G. O. Johnson, whilst C Burmoister and G. G. Tapp figured in a doubles against Miss L. Hughes and D. McMurray. During the visit of the Indian hockey team the association placed a table at their disposal. Owing to the visitors having prior engagements it was not possible to arrange a match. To encourage play among the ladies, Mr P. Kriven has kindly given a cup to be competed for on a handicap basis. For the benefit of club secretaries who have the work of running handicap tournaments, here is the easiest method of handicapping: From your list of entrants select a medium grade player as scratch and handicap the others according to their comparison with this scratch man. Never give a player more than plus 15 or handicap a player more than minus 15. If a plus 10 player meets an opponent who is minus 5 then the score should he 26 points up with the plus man starting at 15-love. The numlwr of points in a game is usually decided by adding the handicap of the “giver” to 21. If both opponents are *plus” men, such as plus 7 playing plus 3, it is best to have the usual 21 points up and allow the plus 7 man to start at 4love.
