ASSOCIATION CODE

MATCHES IN THE MANAWATU. The weather was dull and chilly on Saturday afternoon for tlio matches conducted at North Street Park by the Manawatu Football Association. The counter-attraction of the Show also militated against a good attendance of the public, lint those who were present witnessed a good exposition of tlio code. Athletic met the To Awe Awe team and lost by 3 goals to I. In the other match St. Paul’s lost to Rovers by 4 goals to 1. TE AWE AWE’S VICTORY. Athletic were handicapped from the commencement of tile match, being able to field only seven men as against a full team by Te Awe Awe, but their tactics were of a high standard and they were not disgraced by the scoring. The teams wore as follow: To Awe Awe.—Curtis, Holden, Downes, Bridge, Young, Allan, Kempson, Collins (2), Nicholls, Martin. Athletic.—Crowe, Jeroirison, Watt, McShetfrey, Cummings, Childs (2). At half-time the score was 2-1 m favour of Te Awe Awe, and was quite indicative of the run of play up to that stage. Cummings and jeromson had put in some sterling football and it was only the fact of the depleted personnel tnat was responsible for their efforts being so little rewarded. Holden was in excellent form and had netted twice for the leaders, while MeSheflrey goaled for Athletic. With the change over Athletic exercised telling pressure in the forward line for a little time, but Te Awe Awe were in an impregnable position and retaliated with a series of excursions into the opposing goal area, only to bo well repulsed. Holden was disappointed on several occasions, but success came tlio way of Allan, who netted at close range from a sortie right at the goal mouth. Mr F. W. Ivey was the referee..

AVIN FOR KOAYERS. The match between St. Paul's and Hovers developed into an exciting tussle productive of very good football as the Hovers combination carried the day. The teams lined out as follow : —- St. Paul's.—Lock, ' Thompson, Smillie, Corkindale, Lyon, Marshall, Hearsey, Young. Hovers. —Oman, McNair, Grey, Newton, York, Waldin, Davidson, Morgan, Kichurdson, Anderson. The first spell saw even play, the change over arriving with the teams on terms. AYaldin had scored for Hovers and Corkindale for St. Paul’s. On the resumption of play there were frequent exchanges and the advantage did not rest with either side tor some little time. Gradually, however, the Saints, whose play largely lacked polish, were worn down and Hovers gained the lead when AYaldin netted again. Hovers Jived up to their name in the ensuing period, and rallied splendidly. A forward rush was productive of a penalty kick for obstruction, Oman auding to the points with an easy shot. St. Paul’s applied themselves to the task of reducing the margin, but Waldin came to the attack again and a little later netted the final goal. Mr C. 15. Downes was the referee. THE LOWER GRADES.
