FARMERS’ UNIONS.

SHEEP-WORRYING LOSSES

At the monthly meeting of the Amalgamated Farmers’ Unions on Saturday, at which Mr N. Campbell presided, a letter was received from the Dominion secretary advising that a party of not less than 25 British farmers would arrive in New Zealand on February 26, 1936, and would depart on March 31. They would arrive at Palmerston North on March 6 from Wanganui and depart on March 9.—The conimunication was received and the matter of arranging suitable entertainment for the visitors was held over until a later date.

Mr A. N. Morcom suggested that a committee he set up to assist farmers who were in trouble, to which they could go for advice as to how to approach the authorities in regard to relief.

Mr Bond supported the suggestion, and Messrs A. G. Dear, J. A. McLeavev, E. O. Bond, H. Seifert and the chairman were appointed.

Mr W. G. Shannon moved that the Government he requested to bring down legislation to amend the Dogs Registration Act, 1908, to provide for a compulsory insurance scheme to indemnify stock owners whose stock were damaged or destroyed by dogs, by a levy on the registration of all dogs It often happened, lie said ; that the person who owned the dog did not have sufficient funds to recompense the owner of sheep when some were lost by worrying. Personally, he had had 70 or 80 sheep worried each year in the last seven or eight years. Mr J. D. Balnier thought that enough money was collected now in the registration of dogs to provide such an insurance fund.

Caution was urged by Mr Morcom, who said that ,if such a fund was in operation some owners would allow their dogs to run uncontrolled more than ever.

The motion was carried unanimously.
