ENEMIES OF TROUT. Believing eels to be responsible to a great extent for depleting the rivers .of trout, the council of the South Canterbury Acclimatisation Society lias encouraged the use of eelpots, states the report presented to members at the annual meeting in Timaru. The council made anu distributed a number of pots during the year, and, although the records are not complete, the cards returned show that 1131 eels totalling 31771 b. were caught. During the year £2l 14s was paid out tor snags' heads and eggs, 2s a head being paid for adult birus, Is for nestlings, and 6d for eggs. The council has also encouraged, the destruction of the German owl, which reports indicate is a menace to native bird life. A shilling each was paid for 137 heads during the season, making the total destroyed to date 200.
