DAIRY INDUSTRY.
THE NATIONAL CONFERENCE. Remits forwarded so far for the National Dairy Conference, which is to be held in Palmerston North next month, deal with numerous matters of great importance to the industry. The method of election of dairy farmers’ representatives to the New Zealand Dairy Board is questioned in a remit from the Mercury BavX'oop. Dairy Coy., Ltd., which states:- —- “That in the opinion of this conference the existing provisions for the election of the dairy farmers’ representatives on the New Zealand Dairy Board are entirely unsatisfactory and undemocratic and should be altered to provide:—l. For the elimination of tho tonnage basis. 2. For the abolition of the factory vote. 3. To substitute the direct vote of the producers. 4. That the principle of one man one vote be adhered to. 5. That the elections be by postal ballot.” Other remits are as follow:
Buller A'alley Farmers’ Co-opera-tive Dairy Coy., Ltd.—“ That in view of the prices charged for dairy machinery, implements and spare parts for same the National Dairy Association be requested to secure suitable agencies and retail such machinery, implements and parts to members.” Piliama Co-operative Dairy Coy., Ltd.—“ That the New Zealand Dairy Produce Board be requested to take steps to prevent dairv companies from bolding dairy produce in London for more than a reasonable time after discharge from steamer as this practice nullifies the policy of the Dairv Board in spreading shipments from New Zealand and tin’s giving a continuity of supplies on tlie Home market.” Te Aroha-Tlianies A’albv Co-opera-tive Dairy Coy.. Ltd. —“That this conference petition Parliament to pass the necessary legislation to constitute farm running expenses, fertiliser, goods and reasonable living expenses a first charge on farmers’ butterfat proceeds.” . . Parkvale Co-operative Dairy Coy., Ltd. —“That the provisions of the Loan and Alortgage Corporation are inadequate to restore financial solvency to the dairy industry and that this company believes that the time is ripe to urge the delegates assembled at the National Dairv Conference the urgeuev of uniting and working wholeheartedly for a guaranteed price in New Zealand which will cover costs of production.” Rai ALallev Co-operative Dairy Cov.. Ltd. —“That this company favours the adoption of a standard balance-sheet and system of book-keeping for all dairv companies.” Tauranga Co-onerative Dairy Association. Ltd. —“That this conference takes steps, with a view to having the regulations governing local supply altered, so as to permit the sale of cream, after pasteurisation, direct from dairy factories.”
