Aliss J. Sellar, of Alasterton, is a visitor to Palmerston North’.

Airs R. G. Petrc, who has been visiting Air and Airs Frank Petre, Palmerston North, and Airs AUncent AVard, Heretaunga, has returned to Christchurch.

Air and Airs AV. D. AVilcock, of AValton, AVaikato, are on a visit to Palmerston North, and are the guests of Mrs Garden, Beresford Street. Airs 0. AVilliams, of Palmerston North, who has been acting as adjudicator for the dancing section at the Wanganui Competition Society’s festival, has returned home. Aliss L. Gordon, who has been spending the last two months with friends in Stratford and Pahiatua, is now visiting Palmerston North prior to returning to her lj|ome at Opotiki. Aliss R. Frecklington, of Oliakea, is spending a few days with Mrs F. W. Lethbridge, Arapata, Feilding. Before returning to her home, Aliss Frecklington will stay a week with All's E. Smith, Alarlborough Street, Feilding.

At the concluding session of the Wellington Competitions on Saturdav Aliss June Scott, of Palmerston North, was placed third for the Highland fling (Id and under 16).

At the Wanganui Competitions Miss D. F. E. Junker, of Pahiatua, won the special prize awarded by the Music Teachers’ ltegistration Board of New Zealand open to pupils of registered teachers, to the best performer in the national song section. A number of Mrs S. D. Sherwin’s friends met at the home of Mrs H. D. James, Swiss Avenue, 'Wanganu.i, on Saturday afternoon, when a farewell bridge party was given in the former’s honour. Mrs Sherwin’s son, Mr D. Sherwin, was also the recipient of a memento at a meeting of commercial travellers held during the morning. Mr and Mrs Sherwin .will leave shortly for Palmerston North. For the third time in succession Miss Margaret Magill,- a "Wellington infant mistress, Ims been elected to the Eastbourne Borough Council. Sho lias twice topped the poll and acts as deputy-Mayor. Miss Magill is a brilliant and forceful speaker, and is always one of the principal speakers on important deputations from the council.

AIANAAVATU SCOTTISH SOCIETY

MEAIBERS’ EVENING

The Alanawatu Scottish Society conducted its second members’ and friends’ evening of the year in the Cosmopolitan Hall on Saturday. There was a large attendance, and owing to the coldness of the evening old-time dancing was interspersed with the children’s Highland dancing competitions, the results of which were: —Highland fling, Jtnder 10, D. AValler 1, A r . Nicholson 2, S. Henderson 3; seantriubhas, under 13, AI. Peterana 1, J. AValler 2, B. AAhuller 3; sword dance, under 15, C. Henderson 1, 1. AlcKenzie 2, M. Peterana 3. Air N. Cruden was tho judge, and in, his remarks praised the standard of the performers and issued papers bearing on tlie faults of the competitors. Piper Scott played the accompaniments. After supper old-time dancing only was hold, and the floor was in excellent order, while music was supplied by a leading city orchestra. Airs Linda Bennett gave a much appreciated elocutionary item. Air J. S. jenkinson, chief of tlie society, stated that matters were being arranged in readiness for the “Gathering o’ the Clans,” which takes place early in July. The winners of the lucky partner Gay Gordons were Alavis Peterana and lau Jenkinson. the Pipe Band members were present in their uniforms and gave colour to the gathering. Air H. Hughes was AIC. Airs Norris played for an extra waltz. KEEPING SHELVES CLEAN. To save trouble in keeping shelves clean it is wise to fit the shelves of kitchen cupboards with linoleum. An occasional rub over with a damp cloth will keep them clean and fresh.
