CLOSING OF NOMINATIONS. ASPIRANTS FOR CITY COUNCIL. FOURTEEN CANDIDATES. Nominations closed at noon to-day with the town clerk (Mr J. It. Hardie) for the municipal elections to be held in Palmerston North on May 8. As these are now to take place triennially instead of biennially, the term of office on this occasion will be for three years. The Mayor (Mr A. E. Mansford) has been returned unopposed for another term, making his third in that office, which he has already occupied for four years. There are fourteen aspirants for the nine' positions as city councillors. Messrs il B. Free and W. H. Brown are not seeking re-election, and there are seven newcomers into the lists. Competition for the four city seats on the Palmerston North Hospital Board is confined to seven candidates. For health reasons Mrs L. A. Abraham, who has given long and faithful service, is not standing, while Mr R. L. C. Aitchison, a member for four years, recently announced his withdrawal in favour of the candidature of his mother, Mrs M. Aitchison. There are four candidates for the two district seats on the Wellington Harbour Board, and Mr J A. Nash, M.P., has been returned unopposed as the city’s representative on the Foxton Harbour Board. There are elections in the Spring Creek, Omaka, and Wairau ridings. The tar-sealing of the highways is a question at issue. In the Wairau River Board elections are necessary in the Omaka and Spring Creek sub-divi-sions. In the Awatere County the Flaxbourne and East Coast riding members are returned unopposed, but there are contests foi xnc Upper Awatere and Lower Awatere ridings arising out of local feeling over the Scddon water scheme. Elections arc unnecessary in most cases for representation on the Hospital Board, Power Board, and other subsidiary bodies.
