SYDNEY RATES VERY FIRM. SYDNEY, March 14. At the wool sales to-day 10,156 bales were offered, of which 9279 were sold at auction and 801 disposed of privately. There was very keen and general competition for all good wools which showed quality, and prices were 5 per cent above the previous day’s rates. Other descriptions were unchanged. Inferior sorts continue to display irregularity. Greasy Merino made to 18d. From July 1 to February 28 sales of wool on tho Sydney market totalled 812,034 bales, which realised £10,120,614. Compared with tho corresponding period of tho previous season, the quantity sold showed a decroase of 169,984 bales and the amount realised a decrease of £lO,170,056. Between March 1 and Juno 30, 1934, however, only 98,488 bales were sold on the market, and the quantity on hand and estimated to arrive for sale in tho period this year is 350,000 bales, an increase of 251,512 bales. During the eight months ended February 28 tho greasy and scoured wool sold averaged £l2 9s 3d per bale, or 9.8 d per lb, the average for t lie similar period of 1933-34 being £2O 13s 2d per bale or 16.5 per lb. LONDON WOOL SALES. The N.Z. Farmers’ Co-op. Distributing Coy., Ltd., have received tho following advice from London: —The wool sales opened to-day and prices compared with the close of the last series arc: Greasy Merinos, par to 5 per cent, down; scoured Merinos, none; greasy fine crossbreds, 7£- psr cent, down; medium crossbreds, 5 per cent, to per cent, down; greasy coarse crossbreds, par to 5 per cent, down; scoured crossbreds slipes, 5 per cent, to 10 per cent, down. There was a good attendance and good competition. LONDON TALLOW MARKET FIRM. The Bank of New Zealand (produce departure I ) has received tho following advice from its London office under date March 13: —No public tallow sales held this week owing to insufficient supplies. The market is firm. Nominal quotations: Good mutton, 28s to 28s 6d per cwt.; good beef, 27s 6d to 28s; good mixed, 27s to 27s 6d; gut, 24s to 26s 6d. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd., has received the following report from its London house, dated March 13: —Tallow (quotations at February 28 in parentheses) : Fine mutton, 30s per cwt. Fully 1500 people, probably a record for New Zealand were present at the Showground* to-day where a ‘ale of Mr Andrew Grant’s Allandalo Clydesdales was conducted. Every part of Ihe Dominion was strong'v represented. The catalogue comprised 33 head and these realised 37361 gas, the overhead average exceeding 113 gns. Competition for six fillies was exceptionally keen, these avrratring 181gns, with Ihe ton nricc 250gns. Five stallions averaged 223 urns, six 2-vrar-olds 99£gns, and six yearling colts 721giii Taking into consideration the present times the sale was an outstanding success. The various lots will lie distributed widely throughout the Dominion. The top price of the sale was 300gns. which was paid by a Westland breeder, Mr J. Condon, for the five-vear-old Lady’s Desire. The whole of tho fillies remain in the South Island.
