HEAVY DAMAGE
THE TARANAKI FLOODS. ESTIMATED AT OVER £60,000. Per Press Association. NEW PLYMOUTH, March 13. The damage to roads, bridges and semi-public utilities in the portion of Taranaki immeidately surrounding Mt. Egmont during the flood of February 23 totals approximately £40,000, according to the estimates of the engineers to the seven county councils affected, and the New Plymouth Borough Council. This does not include fairly extensive damage to the railway near Waipuku, numerous slips on the railway between Tahora and Hono, or damage to private property, which is
considerable. By far the greater part of the damage was wash-outs and slips jon the roads and damage to bridges, j scores of which are affected and many | washed completely away, j The main south road is still blocked at Tanga hoe, south of ITawora, and the I main north road near Waitara, owing |to bridges being washed away, but I traffic can got through by detour i routes. | Rivers changing their course are rej sponsible for a certain amount of damI ago and much greater potential damiUge. The Okato district and the New j Plymouth hydro-electric station are i chiefly affected in this respect.
