PAIIIATUA, March 12. Tho Pahiatua Borough Council met last evening, the Mayor (Mr J. D. Wilson) presiding. Air L. W. Kitchen wrote asking that tho stormwater creek should bo closed as lie considered it dangerous because it is an open drain. The council 'decided that the request could not be acceded to. After a long discus ion, ill iwhich it was freely admitted that the pretent sports ground was nut suitable, it was decided to ask tho recreation committee to submit a report on the acquisition of a new ground. Alention was made of the laying down of 1200 yards of metal in tlie"back streets of the borough, it bring said that the metal left a very rough surface. The subject was referred to the works committee. The council decided, on the suggestion of Air H. F. loogood, civil engineer, of Wellington, that the present sppplementary well should be deepened. An effort is then to be made to locate a better flow of water which could be used for household purposes. Seventeen shopkeepers in Alain Street petitioned that tho street bo swept every Saturday, Moudav, and Thursday. The petition was referred to the works committee with power to act. It was reported that the council’s banking account had a .credit balances of £2337 15s 7d. The Mayor said that accounts to bo passed for payment this month totalled £6BB, while there wore others to come in. Tho Alavor was appointed tho council's delegate to attend the Alunicipal Association’s conference in Christchurch and the town clerk (Mr L. D. Lovelock) was granted permission to attend tho annual mooting of the Institute of Town Clerks. A welcome was extended to LieutenantCommissioner and Airs Adams, territorial leaders of the Salvation Army, on Saturday night. A large number attended. Brigadier Cottrill, divisional commander, welcomed the Alavor and other visitors. There' was a good attendance at the meeting of Loyal Alangatainoka Lodge, M.U., 1.0.0. F., held last night. llro. K. Pryde, N.G., presided. P.G. Bro. R. Farrow, of Eketahuna. who represented the lodge at the annual Wellington district conference held at Alasterton, reported on the business transacted. N.G. Bro. G. Coster, of Eketahuna. also spoke on matters relating to tho proposed United Friendly Societies’ hospital scheme. The Mangamutu Tennis Club's A team beat the Kumeroa team in a return match bv 16 sets to 8 and 137 games to 111. Alissos J. K. ami E. Grange are spending a holiday at Waikanae. Aliss _S. Little. Tararua 'Street, has been spending a holiday at Whangarei. Afiss A. Sargent, of Alakomako. returned on Saturday after a week’s holiday in Wanganui. Air and Airs J. Donald, Bideford, Alasterton, who have been the guests of Airs I. Af. Graham, have left cn a motor tour of the North Island.
