FOXTON BEACH ROAD.
DEPUTATION TO HIGHWAYS BOARD. In giving the chairman (G'r. W. E. Barber) and the engineer (Mr H. V. Bond) authority to join a deputation to the Main Highways Board in regard to the tar-sealing of the Foxton Beach Road, the Afanawatu County Council yesterday re-affirmed its sympathy with tlie movement, but declared its inability to financially assist in tlie matter. The subject was discussed when the Foxton Harbour Board wrote requesting the council’s authority for tlie chairman a.nd the county engineer to proceed to Wellington as stated. The chairman briefly reviewed the position, stating that at a meeting of the local bodies interested he had made it plain that the Alann.watu County Council was not in a position to spend any money on the tar-sealing of the road, although at the same time the council would give every other assistance to the project. This view had been accepted bv tlie meeting and the decision made to wa.it on the board in an endeavour to interest it in the matter. Continuing, the chairman dealt with the popularity of the Foxton beach as a health resort and the consequent heavy traffic on the road. This meant benzine consumption which in turn produced revenue through the petrol tax, and it was contended hv the. interested local bodies that portion of this revenue should be made available for the sealing of the road. Cr. J. H. Perrett drew attention to the multiplicity of beaches along the West Coast. If there was only one beach the health resort point would be a good one, but as it was there were beaches all along the coast from New Plymouth southwards. However, the speaker hoped the board would be interested in tlie deputation’s views. The engineer is to supply an estimate of the work is required.
